SCHOLAR NEWS

 

 

  • SBI scholars were leaders in the school and community and were sought out when school representation was needed.

 

  • Many SBI scholars qualified and were accepted into the advanced placement program at HACC during their senior year while still participating in the SBI Prep Program.

 

  • April, 2002--Harrisburg High SBI Website designed and uploaded by SBI senior, Briana Poole – www.sbi.pa.net.

 

  • August 2005--SBI scholars took virtual college courses through partnership with HACC and partnership/sponsorship of Commerce Bank.

 

  • May, 2010 – Harrisburg High SBI seniors, Kewan Bullock & Shakira Martin, each received $100,000 four-year scholarships including full book scholarships to Florida A&M University’s School of Business & Industry.

 

SCHOLAR EMPOWERMENT THROUGH TRAVEL

 

 

  • Toured New York Stock Exchange and attended “Careers in Financial Services Seminar” at WR LAZARD INVESTMENT FIRM in New York.

 

  • Attended National Youth in Business Symposiums in Baltimore, Maryland, Greensboro, North Carolina, Philadelphia, PA, Houston, TX, St. Louis, MO, Atlanta, GA, & Kansas City, MO.

 

  • Scholars visited Florida A&M University School of Business and Industry.

 

  • Overnight college tours to various schools in Pennsylvania.

 

OTHER SWEET VICTORIES

 

 

  • Received international recognition at the International Entrepreneur Conference in Palm Springs, CA as a result of the director’s induction into The International Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.

 

  • Received state recognition as a result of the past director receiving the Central Pennsylvania Entrepreneur Educator of the Year Award.

 

  • November, 2003—1st publication of SBI newsletter, THE TORCH.

 

 

  • Program became the model program for Florida A&M University SBI Prep Program.

ALUMNI NEWS

 

 

  • June, 1997-First Harrisburg High SBI scholar, Kevin Washington, Jr.,--Class of  ‘97— received a full scholarship, including two national internships and one international internship, to the School of Business & Industry at Florida A&M University.

December, 2003—1st SBI alumnus, Kevin Washington, Jr., graduated from Florida A&M School of Business & Industry Five-Year Professional MBA Degree Program.

  • June, 1997—1st SBI scholar, Avery Waddell, accepted to Princeton University.

June, 2001—SBI alumnus, Avery Waddell, graduated from Princeton University and obtained employment with Goldman-Sachs in New York.

  • SBI’s 1st doctor—Dr. Kiandra Poteat, (SBI Class of 1998) Doctorate in Physical Therapy; Widener University, 2006

  • August, 2003—SBI alumnus, Chris O’Bannon, Class of ’96, entered St. Matthew’s School of Medicine, Caymen Islands.

  • August, 2003—SBI alumnus, Tony Thompson, Class of ’99, entered University of Pittsburgh School of Law on full scholarship.

October, 2006—SBI’s 1st lawyer passed “The Bar”, Tony J. Thompson, Esq.

  • September, 2003—SBI alumna, Bernadatte Gray, Class of 2000, entered Boston University School of Medicine.

May 2008 – Dr. Bernadatte Gray graduated from Boston University School of Medicine.

  • December, 2003—1st SBI scholar, VaLonda Harris, accepted to Harvard University.

June, 2009 – SBI Alumna, VaLonda Harris, graduated from Harvard University.

  • September, 2006—SBI Alumna, Andrea Rier, Class of 2002, entered Boston University School of Medicine.

May, 2010 – Dr. Andrea Rier graduated from Boston University School of Medicine.

  • May, 2010—SBI Alumna, Dr. Tamisha Vaughan, Class of 2002, graduated from Virginia Tech University with a PhD from the Biological Services Program, in the area of Innate Immunity

August, 2010 – Dr. Tamisha Vaughan began her career at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA as Director of Research.

  • SBI Alumna, Maisha Marie Murry-PhD Candidate, Class of 1999, completing dissertation and expects to graduate from University of Cincinnati with a PhD in Nuclear & Radiological Engineering.

  • SBI Alumna, Brandi Hunter-Davenport-PhD Candidate, Class of 1996, completing dissertation and expects to graduate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a PhD in Administration and Leadership.

  • SBI Alumna, Roxane Hearn-PhD Candidate, Class of 1994, completing dissertation and expects to graduate with a PhD in Health Psychology.

  • May 2012—Shannon Cumberbatch earned her Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law; she passed “The Bar” that same year.  Attorney Cumberbatch currently serves as a staff attorney in the Criminal Defense Practice of The Bronx Defenders in New York.

  • 35 or more alumni have Masters Degrees.

 

  • 6 or more alumni have Doctorate Degrees

 

  • 2 alumni have Law Degrees.

 

  • Since 1992, awarded over $220,000 in scholarships, along with laptops, to scholars in SBI graduating classes.
